San Satiro – A Super Place in Milan

san-satiro

Just few minutes from the Duomo in Milan, in a small corner in Via Torino, there is something you really don’t want to miss…
Commissioned by the Sforza in 1472, the location available was limited by the presence of a busy street. The choir had to be truncated, making the church awkwardly short. Undeterred by such an obstacle, Bramante devised an ingenious solution… What you see is his painted perspective with columns and arches, one of the first examples of trompe l’oeil in history of art. The result is a stunning magical effect of depth in just 97cm! An astonishing act of visual deception.
Just step aside closer to the altar and the illusion disappears. Step back again and…enjoy the magic!
